IADB Inter-American Development Bank (Washington DC, United States of America)

The Inter American Development Bank provides loans to help with the development of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. These loans are used to pay for projects that are necessary for the development of the nations involved. In addition to money the bank can also provide the governments that they lend to technical assistance in order to help ensure that the projects they are working on will be successful.

The Inter American Development Bank is somewhat unique in the sense that the borrowing nations are actually the majority share holders in the bank. In most development banks the developed countries that actually supply most of the money also hold most of the shares of the bank. This is not the case here, the borrowing nations actually own just over half of the shares in the bank. The theory behind this is that if the borrowing nations had a larger ownership share they would be more likely to pay back the money that they had borrowed. In large part this has proven to be the case.

Like all development banks the main goal of the Inter American Development Bank is to provide funding to help with the development of poorer countries. This is done by providing loans to the governments of the borrowing nations at standard interest rates. The majority of the money that the governments borrow go into infrastructure that is necessary for the commercial development of their nation. There are however a number of other things that the money is used for with one of the most important goals being the social development of the borrowing nations.

One of the biggest areas that the band focuses on is improving the level of education in Latin American countries. They do this in a number of ways but the main ones are on programs to make sure that children are able to attend school and on programs to improve the quality of the teachers. There is also a program that is designed to help students transition from school to work so that they can use their education in their new jobs. While the money that they can provide in this area is important so is the expertise that the bank can provide.

There are a number of other areas on which the Inter American Development Bank focuses its resources. One of the most important is on poverty reduction. This is an important part of the development of a lot of nations. There are also programs to help with providing clean water and sanitation. These days an important area is also on sustainable energy so a lot of effort is getting put into that as well. The bank has been involved in a number of successful projects but there is clearly a long way to go in order to improve the development of the countries of Latin America.
